I spend several weeks in summer 2016 traveling around Greece and visiting museums Mycenaean archaeological sites in order to decide which I would include in my dissertation. The Mycenaean civilization flourished in the 13th and 12th centuries BCE, and is best known for its palace sites at Mycenae, Tiryns, and Pylos, with huge (Cyclopean) fortification walls, monumental tombs, and wealthy burial items. They spoke a very early form of Greek, but it was written using symbols that represented sounds or ideas rather than letters. Writing was only used for economic tallies – there are no historical documents from the period! The Iliad and the Odyssey idealize this period while incorporating many details from the later period in which they were composed. My dissertation, however, will focus on the people outside of and away from the palaces, so I visited a number of tiny sites where much less is visible.
In the second part of the summer, I participated on an archaeological excavation at the Mycenaean site of Iklaina, which is near the palace of Pylos. Archaeology is tough work with days starting as early as 4:30 or 5am, but it is a lot of fun. We mostly find pottery and walls, but sometimes really cool things like figurines or metals.
