Turkan Banu Karatas (Pictured) and Candace Mixon

My name is Turkan Banu Karatas, and I am an undergraduate student at UNC-Chapel Hill majoring in Global Studies and Sociology. I am Turkish and was born and raised in Istanbul, Turkey before coming to UNC. Istanbul is at the intersection of Europe and Asian continents and has housed many civilizations throughout history which is visible through the architecture, people and the atmosphere of the city. In this mesh of cultures, for this culture kit, I have compiled some traditional cultural items, photos and songs about Turkey.

My name is Candace Mixon and I am a PhD student at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. My research is on Islam and religious movements. I was in Turkey this summer to work with a Sufi group there, led by Cemalnur Sargut. Sufis are often said to practice “mystical” Islam, however, we can just say there is a great focus on prayer and spirituality in Sufi Islam. I traveled around the country visiting special religious sites, such as Cappadocia, Bursa, Konya, and Istanbul, and then spent a lot of time in Istanbul visiting mosques and attending a variety of religious places throughout the big city.
