My name is Irene Yingyue Zhan. My birth name, Yingyue, means the reflection of moonlight. I was born in Beijing, China and spent most of my life there until I went to the U.S. for high school at the age of 14. I have always loved Beijing because although it is very fast-changing and globalized, its own cultural background remains a strong presence. Many who do not know much about China tend to believe the Chinese culture is homogeneous across the country; however, there is great diversity between different geographical regions. As a Beijinger, I have encountered cultural shock when I visit the Southern part of China. We eat different food, have different styles of housing, speak in different accents and so on. Therefore, I really cannot claim myself as an expert on the entire entity of China. Instead, I present you with a special cultural kit mostly about Beijing, where I was born and grew up in.
