Mikayla Tencer

My name is Mikayla Tencer and I grew up in Greensboro, North Carolina. After high school I was accepted to the University of North Carolina and am currently a sophomore. I plan to graduate in May 2018, my major is management and society and minor social and economic justice. This past summer, the summer of 2015, I received the opportunity through Greenheart Travel and those at the Center of Global Initiatives at UNC to travel to France and other parts of Europe. I found this opportunity originally by applying to receive a free passport through CGI’s Passport to Go program. Once I received the award for a free passport they held different events to link all the students who had received the award with opportunities to go abroad. One of the events the people at CGI held for us was a grant and scholarship writing workshop. At the event they introduced a new scholarship opportunity to fund students going abroad for a variety of reasons. It had sparked interest to me and after the workshop I began to search online for global opportunities. I found the opportunity to go live with a host family in France and teach them English through the Greenheart Travel organization. I then filled out both the applications for the program and the scholarship and was blessed to receive them both. My time abroad was wonderful. It opened my eyes and mind to a world beyond America. I learned so much about the French culture and language and about myself as well. I am already itching to go back to Europe and discover other parts of the world. I hope this culture kit gives you a broader perspective of France and their rich culture.
