Introduction

Hello, Nsanyuse okukulaba! My name is Leslie Willis. I am a senior Global Studies and Sociology double major at UNC.  While I have lived in North Carolina my entire life, I love learning about different cultures and peoples. I have studied abroad in Ghana, and this past summer, I interned in Uganda. I have also spent some time in Egypt, South Africa, Togo, and Kenya. My time in these countries are some of the most memorable experiences in my life, and I would love to share my knowledge of these countries with your class!

“Africa is not a Country.”

There is no one way to describe Africa. Africa is an incredibly diverse continent in terms of cultures, peoples, languages, customs, beliefs, music, arts, etc. Using photographs and artifacts from various countries, I will break down common misconceptions of the African continent and bring the diverse cultures to the fingertips of the students. My presentation will focus primarily on Ghana in West Africa and Uganda in East Africa but will also use examples from South Africa and Egypt. Since these countries are in four different regions of the continent, they will provide a great comparison and contrast of the diversity on the continent, creating in the students a broader understanding of Africa.

Leslie, would you agree that even after your experience and enlightening encounters with the two nations you visited you cannot break the complete misconceptions? Do you believe and agree that you still don’t know Africa and the nations that you visited?
