This Mexico Kit has many items for your students to explore! In terms of clothing, there is a traditional poncho. It also includes various food and drink packages (chicharrones), magazines, newspapers, books about immigration to the US, and “More Families in Mexico” DVD. Your students will love trying on the lucha libre mask, playing with the traditional toy balero, and winning Yuchateca Bingo! In this Kit you will also find a small statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe, a manger, toy guitar, and variety of CDs. Teach your students about holidays and festivals with the Day of the Dead calavera (skull) and DVD, and greeting cards. Finally, there are Mexican pesos, clothes pins, a Mexican flag and map, a model pyramid of Chichen Itza, postcards, and hotel and tourist information in Spanish so that your students can practice their language skills.

Liz Bucrek is the Program Manager for Carolina Navigators, and helps to provide K-16 teachers and students with global education resources created by Carolina students who have international expertise. She has over ten years of experience in the field of education. Liz has worked as a secondary French and Spanish teacher, as an instructional coach, and as the Director of the Academy of International Studies at Carrboro High School.

Originally from Michigan, Liz has studied abroad in France, taught English in Spain, and traveled throughout the US, Europe, the Caribbean, Latin America, and Asia. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and her Master’s Degree at NC State University.

This was Liz’s fourth trip to Mexico. Liz collected some of the items for this Culture Kit and while traveling with her middle school Spanish students to Mexico City, Pueblo, and Taxco, in 2004, and other items while on vacation in Cancun, Mexico, in 2013.
