Elizabeth Byrum and Anna Phillips

Elizabeth Byrum is a graduate student at the UNC School of Social Work. In June 2017, she traveled to the state of Guanajuato, Mexico to conduct a research project focused on the presence of stress and self-harming behaviors among young Mexican adolescents. The project included a three-day intervention given to sixth graders at a local elementary school. Elizabeth has traveled to Guanajuato twice before and loves the opportunity to live in thriving Guanajuato communities including Dolores Hidalgo and Juventino Rosas. One of her favorite things to do in Mexico is to savor the local cuisine and some of her favorite dishes include tamales, pozole, and nopales. She has traveled to the following Mexican states: Guanajuato, Mexico City, D.F., Querétaro, Quintana Roo, Tamaulipas, and the Yucatán and hopes to continue to explore the states and regions of this wonderful country.

My name is Anna Phillips, and I am from Sugar Grove, North Carolina. I am a second year student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a major in Spanish. I love learning languages and increasing my awareness of less familiar cultures. For the summer of 2017, I received the Center for Global Initiative Award and the Harrington Scholarship for study in Latin America, both of which made it possible for me to spend a month at La Universidad de las Américas Puebla in Puebla, Mexico, improving my Spanish. Though the program only lasted a month, I can say for certain that my Spanish did improve very much while I was in Mexico. I was entranced by the culture I encountered and hope that I will have many opportunities to return.
