Alexis Strang

My name is Alexis Strang, and I am a student at UNC Chapel Hill. I grew up in Concord, North Carolina and have lived there my entire life. This summer, I travelled outside of America for the first time in order to study abroad in Fez, Morocco. For 9 weeks, I lived with a Moroccan family and went to school in order to learn how to speak, read, and write in Arabic. Growing up, I didn’t know much about North African or Arab cultures or the religion of Islam, so when attending UNC, I knew I wanted to learn more about these groups of people that I’ve heard so much about in the media. My experience helped me to gain a better understanding of Moroccan culture specifically, and Arab and North African culture more broadly. My time studying and living in Morocco also helped me to learn more about Islam, and appreciate the complex relations between culture and religion.

Apart from my academic interests, I enjoy strolls in parks and woods, watching comedic movies, attempting to cook new dishes, and visiting fun, new places with my friends. I hope that this kit helps you to learn about Morocco and sparks your interest in other cultures and religions that may be different from your own!
