My name is Candace Mixon and I am a PhD student at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. My research is on Islam and religious movements. I was in Turkey this summer to work with a Sufi group there, led by Cemalnur Sargut. Sufis are often said to practice “mystical” Islam, however, we can just say there is a great focus on prayer and spirituality in Sufi Islam. I travelled around the country visiting special religious sites, such as Cappadocia, Bursa, Konya, and Istanbul, and then spent a lot of time in Istanbul visiting mosques and attending a variety of religious places throughout the big city.

My name is Emily Piper, and I am a senior at UNC-Chapel Hill, studying Journalism and Political Science. Last semester, from February 13th-June 13th, I studied abroad at Bogazici Universitesi in Istanbul, Turkey. From my time in Turkey, I have compiled any and all information that I think is pertinent to developing an understanding of Turkey.

Emma Harver is the Outreach & Program Coordinator for the Carolina Center for the Study of the Middle East and Muslim Civilizations and the Duke-UNC Consortium for Middle East Studies. She works with K-12 and community college educators on behalf of the Consortium, as well as providing administrative support for the UNC Mideast center. She traveled to Turkey on an educational trip to learn more about Middle East history and culture. Emma holds a B.A. in Global Studies and Political Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
